Tomorrow’s Project: Foster Youth with a Future
Tagline: Preparing Foster Youth for success towards adulthood with educational programs.
Tell us about your Tomorrow’s Project.
My Tomorrows Project is to help enrich the current and former foster youth in the Los Angeles area through the non-profit organization United Friends of the Children. Since 1979, UFC has been an integral part of the Los Angeles foster care community with early advocacy efforts that helped establish the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services and pass the Foster Care Independence Act. My Tomorrows Project will help fund 700 foster youth to attend UFC’s College Readiness & Sponsorship Programs which is an 11-year education support continuum that follows foster youth from the seventh grade through the completion of a bachelor’s degree.
Why did you decide to partner with United Friends of the Children?
My relationship with United Friends of the Children began when I became actively involved with volunteering on the weekends and attending their local charity events. I was inspired by the foster youths’ determination to help make a difference in their lives as I also have friends and family who grew up in a foster home or were adopted as a foster child. It has been very rewarding working with the foster youth as I have been able to help motivate them to pursue higher education. I am particularly inspired by the UFC staff who work with each individual on a case-by-case basis providing students with the financial and emotional support to attend college.
What impact has been made so far?
UFC has made great strides by guaranteeing that 100% of the foster youth in their programs graduate high school. Their College Readiness program services include academic preparation, educational advocacy, workshops, college tours, SAT prep and tutoring. Their College Sponsorship program assists foster youth to attend four year colleges without the fear of an overwhelming financial burden and offers support services with the goal of increasing college graduation rates. Through their programs, UFC has been able to decrease the challenges that the foster youth face such as homelessness, incarceration, poor educational attainment, physical & emotional health, and lack of employment. By unlocking their full potential and with the proper support and guidance, the foster youth in their programs can make a successful transition into adulthood.
Why is the Tomorrows Project important to you?
The Tomorrows Project is important to me because it allows TOMS employees to significantly contribute to causes they support. Through the Tomorrows Project, I can become an advocate for the Foster Youth and also inspired other TOMS employees to become volunteers. TOMS’ mission is to improve lives through business, but through the Tomorrows Project we get to take it to the next level!
